Society Obsessed

I managed to see the Royal Academy Johan Zoffany exhibition just before it closed and have fallen in love with his conversational portraiture and its ability to tell the stories of a Georgian society and British Imperial rule. His perspective of social rituals and habits is fascinating and his art reads like a modern Hello magazine. A contemporary of Gainsborough and Turner, he managed to distinguish his work with quirky details and an informal air that shed a whole new light and perspective on the personality of the sitter. His work is wonderfully classical and wonderfully eccentric all at the same time.
